I’m more than over this writer’s strike. Clearly, we all know what they want by now…royalties, residuals…and I’m not sure they aren’t justified. On the other hand, while they are striking shows they’ve already written for are running repeats (and no compensation, right?) while we are paying our cable, phone or satellite companies for programmes we’ve seen several times over in the last few months. Can we go on strike, get rebates from those who service our entertainment needs? Pretty much all we are left with, fresh…besides movies…are news magazines and reality shows. The question is “whose reality?”
Take “Wife Swap”…I don’t think I’ve seen one (and I admit I have been watching it) which relates to anyone I know…aside from the fact that some (or much) of it has to be set-up. “SuperNanny”? She would be out of a job had she ever came to my house…haven’t those parents heard of “start as you mean to go on” and discipline their children, set rules, boundaries when they start walking, instead of waiting until they’ve heard they can report their parents for making them take out the trash, smacking their behinds or not giving them everything their little hearts demand…and that seems to be about four or five years old these days. These parents don’t seem to have expectations of their children to follow rules, be disciplined or suffer consequences of their actions. Maybe the instruction booklets we older generation parents were given when our kids were born aren’t issued any longer? Most of us didn’t have nannies…how about good old commone sense?
Moving on…”Dancing with the stars”, The Bachelor, Bridezilla, Cops…have to admit I don’t watch them but yet curious anyone would find them “entertaining”. C’mon guys and women…are we going to get to see the new “Lost” episodes, “Eli Stone” on the appointed date of the debut?

I hope so…
As to the TV programmes you mentioned, I live in the UK and we do have our own version of those programmes over here.
I have caught a glimpse now and again of the said programmes and could not watch them if you paid me to do so.
Funny thing is, when I am at work, I am left out of the conversation quite a lot as my colleagues are engrossed with this type of programme. I know nothing about them but they hold no interest for me anyway.
I would think the strike will eventually catch up with us in the UK, especially on the cable channels, but as I am not an avid TV watcher, it will not make a lot of difference to me.
WE are still be subjected to programmes that were running five years ago. We pay a TV licenece of approx $280 per year for the pleasure of watching all those repeats.
Give me the PC anytime!
I’d imagine you may feel the effects of this strike e’re long though maybe not quite as much as we feel it. At least American Idol has begun it’s new season and while I’m not mad about it, it’s better than most ‘reality’ shows I suppose and certainly better than most of the repeats! Mind you, there are some repeats worth watching over and over…and talk about old! PBS here shows BritCom night on Saturdays and still showing repeated repeats of “Are you being served”, “Keeping Up Appearances”, Fawlty Towers…never did like that show or John Cleese! Best of all “The Vicar of Dibley” (before Alice even got married…lolol). Now, how old would they be?
