Truck Power v. Willpower

Somewhat disappointed to say the quitting smoking…well, we haven’t. But we have cut down…me, drastically. Tried without any assist and I was loathe to wear the patch. I’d rather smoke than itch to death though I did get as far as taking a patch out of the box for after the shower one morning. It’s still on the vanity…just in case. However, while I certainly don’t enjoy every cigarette I light there are some in each day which delight me. To anyone counting the packs I’d go through in a carton it’s fair to say it would seem I’m a two-pack a day smoker. I’d argue I wasn’t. I light two packs a day but more burn out in the ashtray than are actually smoked, while I type, clean, drive…even watch tv. But going on the premise I went through two packs each day, I’m actually now down to one…as is my partner. Fortunately for us, we each smoke…and only smoke…a specific type and brand. I’m strictly menthol while she will only smoke regular tobacco.
So I devised this wonderful idea. Total quitting was going nowhere fast, I wanted a carton but not be tempted to return to the familar habit and suggested we buy our cartons, she keeping mine in her truck while I keep hers at home. She works almost thirty miles away so I’m not going to run up to her place of business for a pack of cigarettes and, so far, have not made a zippy trip to any of the cigarette stores in a twelve mile radius to sneak an extra pack. She brings a pack in for me each evening when she comes home and trades mine for a pack of her own. Maybe in a week or two we will be down to a pack every two days…some will say it won’t work, I think it might. For me choice is the thing…if I know I can have one when I really feel like it I can…and do…stave off the habitual craving without feeling deprived. But, if worse comes to worst, we are taking a trip to San Diego in three weeks and, being that long, up in the air with cigarettes banned I guess I’ll settle for the itch. The house rented for us is non-smoking so…patch again. We’ll be there for five days and I’m thinking that by the time we fly home we shall be non-smokers (and heaven, hopefully, will preserve us from ever being anti-smokers) OR…we’ll so make up for lost time when we get home we’ll need a chimney sweep to clean our lungs. Fingers crossed…though I’m not totally sure for which.

I am guessing that when you both return from your trip, you will both be in heaven, by means of puffing away like it was going out of fashion. Which it is!
Excuses will be “a cigarette will help me to forget the itch that the patch caused”. I don’t like patches and some say they are quite dangerous, more so than a cigarette. Who knows?
I am a great believer in “Everything in moderation”
It is a known fact that non smokers are more likely to suffer from Parkinsons Disease than someone who smokes, Fact!
So, there is a good side and a bad side to everything.
WE have to make our own minds up about things in life, but I think there are far worse things than smoking.
I have to agree with you, Annied…and I’m thinking that when we do get home there is a good possibility that I’ll be so grateful I didn’t fall through 30,000′ of open air that smoking might not seem such a bad thing. On the other hand, you watch…I’ll quit and about fifteen years from now…maybe ten…like they did with butter, eggs and a few other things, they’ll do a reversal and say “Ooops! We were wrong…”
hey nance, keep up the good work at trying to quit WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO WITH ALL THAT EXTRA MONEY?
Well, now, BJ…good question but since we haven’t quite done it yet…oh, what the heck. Probably more sweaters and treats (maybe they will even get shoes) for the “kids”, new cat trees and cat beds…and treats. We are looking into tax deductions!
